What is obstructive sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat relax too much during sleep and cause the patient to stop breathing for significant periods of time. When this happens, patients usually wake up just enough to continue breathing again. While many people have no memory of waking up, these episodes interrupt the sleep cycle and can lead to a very poor quality of sleep. Patients often struggle with sleep apnea for years before receiving a diagnosis because they just assume that their lack of energy is from not getting enough sleep.

How do I know if I have sleep apnea?

Virtually anyone can develop sleep apnea, but men and older patients are at an increased risk. Factors like weight, genetics, and smoking can also affect whether a person develops sleep apnea. If you have any of the following common sleep apnea symptoms, we recommend scheduling a visit with a sleep doctor:

  • Chronic lethargy and drowsiness
  • Loud snoring
  • Waking up gasping or choking
  • Frequent or daily headaches
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

How do dentists treat sleep apnea?

Patients are sometimes surprised to learn that the same team that takes care of their teeth and gums can also treat sleep disorders. Patients with sleep apnea often use CPAP machines to ensure that they are getting oxygen throughout the night. Our office creates custom oral appliances that hold the jaw slightly forward so that the patient’s airway remains open throughout the night. The appliances are small, comfortable to wear, and do not require electricity or distilled water to operate like CPAP machines do, so they are easy to travel with.
